State
Superintendent Jack O’Connell and Barona Council
Learn of the S.E.A. Experience
On December 11, 2007, the Barona
Education Grant Council and State Superintendent
of Education, Jack O’Connell, visited S.E.A.'s
East Los Angeles site to learn about programs,
and student academic success. During the visit,
guests learned of S.E.A.’s mission and the
incredible transformation achieved by students
through the program.
S.E.A. is grateful to State
Superintendent Jack O’Connell and the Barona
Council for their continued support. Thanks to
their efforts S.E.A. continues to assist
students regain self confidence, learn
employable skills, and, most importantly,
integrate themselves as productive citizens of
our society. |

Maximizing
Partnerships with Local
Colleges S.E.A. has the great fortune of
partnering with De Anza
Community College in northern California.
Through this partnership and thanks to the
efforts of Mr. David Flores, president of the
Computer Assisted Study program (ComPas), our
students can learn AutoCAD – a software
application and one of the first programs to run
on personal computers, notably the IBM PC –
while earning S.E.A. community college
credits.
The program created new opportunities for
over 600 students to earn credits learn key
skills that will enable their marketability as
future employees. In addition, De Anza trains
instructors and instructional aides in AutoCAD
and other cutting-edge technologies. The De Anza
program is currently being offered at the
following S.E.A. sites: Compton, Crenshaw, East
Los Angeles, Estrada Courts, Firestone,
Hollywood, Long Beach, Manchester, Montebello,
North Hills, Long Beach, Norwalk, Pacoima,
Pomona, Soto, South Central, and South
Gate.
We are grateful to De Anza for this
partnership and for its generous donations of
desktop and laptop computers, and flat screen
televisions for use in our S.E.A. classrooms.
Without a doubt, the De Anza program is an
excellent addition to the S.E.A. educational
program. |

S.E.A.
Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Day at the
Union Rescue
Mission More than two hundred S.E.A. students and
staff volunteered at the Union Rescue Mission on
Monday January 21, 2008 to commemorate the work
of Dr. Martin Luther King. The volunteers
participated in a variety of community building
projects throughout the four-story mission,
which include; sanitizing mattresses; and
preparing hot meals for residents and the
thousands of guests that the mission serves each
day. Overall it was a great way to honor the
life of and memory of Dr. King with over 20,000
volunteer hours served and more than 1,700
homeless people impacted.
Established in 1891, the Union Rescue
Mission (URM) is one of the largest rescue
missions of its kind in the United States and
the oldest in Los Angeles. URM provides a
comprehensive range of emergency and long-term
services to needy men, women and children
including: food, shelter, clothing, medical and
dental care, recovery programs, transitional
housing, legal assistance, education counseling,
and job training. |

The
Camp Eaton
Experience One of S.E.A.'s most popular programs –
the Camp Eaton experience – provides 12 students
who show potential in overall academic
performance with a unique opportunity to
participate in a two-day Personal Achievement
Workshop at the Camp Eaton camp grounds. During
the workshops, participants learn about a wide
range of topics including: life skills,
character-building education, student-teacher
relationships, and the value of goal setting.
Students are also encouraged to participate in
outdoor competitions and activities in the
camp’s beautiful natural surroundings.

S.E.A. DIRECTOR'S
MESSAGE |
| |
This year is an especially important
one for S.E.A. student achievement. School
administrators, teachers, and volunteers – all
mentors – must encourage and prepare students
for high achievement in everything they do while
holding each other accountable for high quality
and rigorous instruction each and every day.
In addition,
teachers, assistants, office managers, parenting
instructors and all support staff must determine
the role that they will play in encouraging
students to do their very best. We all know that
high school is a critical training ground for
adulthood. This is why, I believe that by
providing students with the proper tools for
academic and professional success, encouraging
goal setting, and instilling in them the
importance of achieving one’s very best we are
laying the groundwork for an incredibly gifted
future.
Bill Clinton once said that
"people who grew up under difficult
circumstances and yet are successful have one
thing in common … at a critical junction in
their early adolescence they had a positive
relationship with a caring adult." Let’s all
make a commitment to be that "caring adult" in a
young person’s
life.
