Oprah visits SEA Prom!

This June, twenty-five lucky Manchester students got a very special surprise.

Every year, in preparation for prom, SEA Manchester teacher Cen’Cere Cooks sends out requests for dress donations. It’s her way of ensuring Prom is a wonderful experience for those students who can not otherwise afford to go. This year, she decided to use the power of Twitter to reach out to potential donors.

The response she got was bigger than she could have every expected. None other than Oprah Winfrey re-sponded to Ms. Cook’s tweet, answering “Great new! I spoke to our friends at @Macys and they are happy to help with the prom dresses. My team will be in touch.”

A week later, Ms. Cooks and twenty-five very excited girls were taken to Macy’s South Coast Plaza, where a team of fashion experts helped the students choose their dream dresses. They re-eived style and hair tips and got to pick their dresses from out of Macy’s expansive catalogue. The girls were even treated to break-fast and lunch at the store.

SEA is thrilled for our very lucky students, and are incredibly grateful to both Oprah and Macy’s. We also want to express our incredible gratitude to Ms. Cooks, whose efforts on behalf of our students really helped dreams come true.

SEA’s 2012 Prom was held July 27 at Almansor Court in Alhambra, California.
